
Jessica Michelle Chastain, born March 24, 1977 is an American actress. Her main focus is on films with feminist themes, she has received various accolades such as an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award. Time magazine named her one of the top 100 people in the world in 2012. Chastain was an avid actor from an early age. She made her professional performance debut on stage as Shakespeare's Juliet in 1998. She was a student at the Juilliard School and was then hired to a talent-holding contract with John Wells, a television producer. She was a frequent guest on several television seriesand was also cast in roles in several stage productions. After making her film debut at age 31 in the drama Jolene (2008), Chastain had her breakthrough in 2011 with six film projects that included the dramas Take Shelter (2011) and The Tree of Life (2011). She was awarded Academy Award nominations for playing an aspiring socialite in period drama The Help (2011) and an CIA analyst in the thriller Zero Dark Thirty (2012). The science-fiction films Interstellar (2014), The Martian (2015) and It Chapter Two (2018) were more commercially successful. Chastain has also received praise for her portrayals of strong-willed women in the dramas A Very violent Year (2014), Miss Sloane (2016), and Molly's Game (2017), as well as the mini-series on television Scenes from a Marriage (2021). She was later cast as Tammy Faye Bakker in the biopic The Eyes of Tammy Faye (2021) and won the Academy Award for Best Actress, and Tammy Wynette in the miniseries George & Tammy (2022). Chastain is the creator of the production company Freckle Films, which was established to encourage diversity in film, and is an shareholder in the soccer club Angel City FC. She is vocal about gender equality, mental illness and racial equity. Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo is her husband.
